Meet Our Keynote Speaker - Robert Arnold

A Family Legacy in Aviation — Told Through the Eyes of Those Who Lived It
The DC-3 Society is honored to welcome Robert Bruce Arnold as the keynote speaker for the DC-3 Society Operator Conference & Showcase. Robert will speak during the dinner program Saturday evening, December 5. He and wife Kathy will join for the entire weekend.
Robert brings something truly extraordinary to our gathering: a direct family connection to two of the most influential figures in the history of American aviation.
He is the grandson of General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, the legendary military aviation pioneer and five-star general who helped shape American air power, and the grandson of Donald W. Douglas Sr., the pioneering aircraft designer, engineer, and founder of the Douglas Aircraft Company.
His mother, Barbara Douglas Arnold, was the daughter of Donald Douglas Sr.
That family connection makes Robert's story especially meaningful to the DC-3 Society.
The Douglas Legacy
Long before the DC-3 became an icon of aviation, Donald Douglas was building an aircraft company that would fundamentally change the way the world traveled and went to war.
The Douglas Aircraft Company produced some of the most significant aircraft of the 20th century, including the DC-1, DC-2, and ultimately the DC-3—the aircraft whose legacy brings our Society together today.
The DC-3 was more than an airplane. It represented a transformation in commercial aviation, demonstrating that air transportation could be practical, reliable, comfortable, and economically viable. Its military evolution as the C-47 would go on to play an indispensable role in World War II.
For the DC-3 Society, having Donald Douglas's grandson join us as our keynote speaker creates a remarkable connection between the aircraft we preserve today and the people who helped make its existence possible. Robert doesn't simply speak about aviation history. He inherited a front-row seat to it.

The Arnold Legacy
Robert's other grandfather was General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, one of the most influential figures in the development of American military aviation.
Arnold commanded the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and became the only individual to hold the five-star rank of both General of the Army and General of the Air Force. His career spanned the earliest years of military aviation through the emergence of American air power as a decisive force on the world stage.
Robert has spent years preserving and sharing that history, including writing about aviation history and making portions of the Arnold family's personal collection available for preservation and research. His historical work includes an article for Air Power History examining the pioneering air-to-air refueling experiments at Rockwell Field in 1923.
Two Aviation Legacies. One Extraordinary Story.
The significance of Robert's family history is particularly powerful when viewed through the lens of the DC-3.
On one side of his family stands Donald Douglas, whose aircraft company created the lineage that produced the DC-3.
On the other stands Hap Arnold, whose vision and leadership helped transform American military aviation—and whose wartime leadership intersected with the Douglas Aircraft Company and the enormous industrial effort that made American air power possible.
Robert Bruce Arnold stands at the intersection of those two stories.
His perspective offers something that cannot be found in a textbook: a personal connection to the people behind the names, the aircraft, and the history.

History Through the Family Album
As part of Robert's keynote and his appearance at the DC-3 Society Operator Conference & Showcase, we are honored to share selected photographs from his family's historical collection.
These images provide a rare glimpse into the people and moments that shaped aviation history.

A Living Connection to Aviation History
The DC-3 Society exists because we believe these stories matter. The aircraft we preserve are not simply machines. They are tangible connections to the people, innovation, sacrifice, engineering, and history that shaped generations of aviation Robert Bruce Arnold brings that philosophy to life in a uniquely personal way.
As the grandson of Donald Douglas, he carries a direct connection to the man whose company created the aircraft at the heart of our Society.
As the grandson of General Hap Arnold, he also carries the legacy of a man who helped shape the military aviation environment in which the DC-3 and its C-47 counterpart would become legendary.
And as a historian, author, and steward of his family's history, Robert continues the work of preserving the stories behind those names.
